Notes on the photographs

After screwing around with dilettante-level cameras in the 1980s, I purchased my first real machine, an SLR by Canon (the EOS Elan), at the PX in Schofield Barracks in '91.  I used this for most of the shots taken around Hawaii and in Houston from then until 1994, as well as on the road trip back from Ft. Lewis (down the west coast, into southern California, then onto I-10 all the way back to Houston).  The Grand Canyon, Washington, Oregon and San Diego albums were taken with this camera.

From 1994 through around 2000, all I had at my disposal were disposables and a couple of Polaroids.  There is a dearth of photos taken during my residence in Sealy (starting in 1995) as a result, and my photographic efforts only really resumed once I moved back into Houston in 1998, albeit slowly.  In 2000, I was able to borrow a Kodak digital from time to time, and photos of this era have a telltale black strip with datestamp in the lower right corner.  However, from 2001 through 2004, I was back to relying on my Polaroids and disposables, and there is another gap in my photographic output.  (I may even now have undeveloped film from this era, probably far too corrupted to develop at this point.)

Most of the prints from the pre-2004 era have been scanned on flatbed scanners of the HP ScanJet 4570c variety, and the early results, before I got a handle on scan settings, were often questionable.  One of my long-term projects involves rescanning everything, but it's on hold until I can dig out the prints and the scanner's power supply, all of which are in storage until I move into a new place.  Photo scans are presented as-is, in the hope that I can replace the clunkier images reasonably soon.

From 2004 on, my primary camera has been a Fujifilm FinePix S3100.  It works tolerably well, but lacks some of the features I'd become accustomed to on the Canon.  When I become satisfied enough with my output to justify moving back to a full SLR, I may attempt to acquire another Elan (or talk my ex-wife into parting with my old one).

I also have a Minolta DImage G500 pocket camera, which sits unused until I can replace the battery charger.  The Fujifilm has been my primary workhorse for about a decade, although the slow shutter response (and generally low shutter speeds in the modes I use the most) result in a lot of wasted shots unless I keep it mounted on a tripod.  I also generate a lot of still frames from videos taken on my trusty Canon ZR500 mini-DV camcorders (I own two, dating back to 2006) and my Panasonic PV-GS320 mini-DV camcorder.  These will usually be distinguishable from other digital photos by way of their widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio.
